Middleham Twinning Association

Good company and a warm welcome

Middleham has been formally twinned with Azincourt since 1987, and the Twinning Association has been organising successful exchange visits ever since.  Alternating visits have taken place every year, interrupted only by Covid, and they have since recommenced with renewed enthusiasm in both communities.

Several new members joined our delegation to Azincourt in 2023 and found it to be an overwhelmingly positive and warm experience.  Our French friends provided free accommodation in their homes for two nights; and we were entertained and wined and dined by the whole community.  In 2024, we will be welcoming them to back to Middleham and we have a responsibility to match the hospitality we received in France.

The costs of entertaining our French guests are met by a series of community fundraising events (see diary) which are organised by the Association’s committee and numerous willing volunteers. You don’t have to speak French or go to France to enjoy Twinners membership. The emphasis is on socialising with an interesting group of people from different backgrounds. New members can expect a very warm welcome. There is some kind of event happening in most months. The annual cost is only £7.00.

Everyone is made to feel very welcome

Participation in the Middleham Twinners is a very positive experience.  Although we have lived in Middleham for a very long time, it has given us the opportunity to get to know new residents quickly and well.  Helping at the events gives a sense of belonging and everyone is made to feel very welcome.  A big plus factor is that the events are held in town which gives a sense of community and attendance is not dependent on a car.

Enjoyable and welcoming events

I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you and the Committee for keeping the Twinners going with such dedication.  You provide such enjoyable events and have made Dave and me so welcome.  We are not naturally sociable, so really appreciate mixing with other members and feeling so included.  You have certainly enriched our lives, so a big thank you to you all.”

An opportunity to meet other town residents

As newcomers to the town, we were initially sceptical about becoming involved in an established group, but our reservations soon abated as everyone was so friendly and welcoming, without being overbearing.

We were very kindly invited to the Summer BBQ back in July as guests, with no pressure to join.  The afternoon was very relaxed with great food and company, mixed weather makings it all the more interesting, giving us the opportunity to meet other town residents and twinners.

We had a most enjoyable time and have since joined the group.  Looking forward to the next get together —  a French film night next month.  Great varied events!

Looking forward to the next event

I would like to say how delighted I am that the current Committee has managed to revitalise the Middleham Town Twinning Association, post Covid.

The open meetings have been a great success: Quiz Nights and the French Breakfast particularly.  The members only meetings, such as the very enjoyable Summer BBQ, have been well supported by both new and old members.

We are looking forward to the French Film Night in November and the next Quiz Night in December.  I hope these open meetings will bring in more new members, who will then be able to join us in welcoming our French friends from Azincourt next May.
